Authentication & Legalization
The Canadian Apostille Process
Canada is not a signatory to The Hague Apostille Convention. As Canada is a non-signatory, Canadian documents for use abroad must be certified twice, this is officially called “Authentication and Legalization”.

What are the "Authentication and Legalization", is the same as the "apostille" process in Canada?"Authentication is the certification of the genuineness of the signature and seal of an official. Through this process, it is attested that the official has the authority to execute, issue or certify a document in one jurisdiction, so that it may be recognized in another jurisdiction. Ordinarily, documents authenticated by the issuing country may be subject to requirements for Legalization (i.e., further certification by consular authorities of the country of destination). An apostille is a specific type of authentication certificate. Apostilles are issued by countries that are parties to the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (also known as the “Apostille Convention”). The purpose of the Apostille Convention is to simplify the authentication process by removing the requirement for legalization. Visit the HCCH website for up to date information and to view the current list of countries. At this time, Canada is not a party to the Apostille Convention and does not issue apostilles. The process used in Canada to verify the signatures on official documents is called Authentication and Legalization.
